Hip-Hop's DMX Makes SXSW Austin Appearance


DMX, the Austin-based international "sensory design" think-tank that creates brand experiences for commercial environments, is taking over its hometown this week and making a huge splash at SXSW 2007. Notorious B.I.G. Hip-Hop Album Is Billboard's #1

Ice Cube Producing New Reality Series 'Good in the Hood'


Ice Cube continues his push on to the small screen with a new hour long reality television series on A&E titled Good in the Hood.
Ice Cube will introduce each episode, which features a different reformed gang member, drug dealer or criminal, who takes on the responsibility of rehabilitating another person with similar circumstances.
Good in the Hood is being executive produced by Ice Cube & long time collaborator Matt Alvaraz, along with Dave Broome, Colleen Conway and Rob Sharenow.
"One of the most powerful elements in the show is the personal connection of the two subjects," co-executive producer Rob Sharenow told Variety. "People who are still in thrall to drugs or violence are more apt to respond to someone who has walked in their shoes."
A&E currently reaches over 91 million homes. The network hopes Good in the Hood will help capture a younger demographic.
Last year, shows like Dog the Bounty Hunter, Intervention and reruns of The Sopranos helped improve A&E's viewing audience by 4% among adults 25-54, 13% among adults 18-49 and 24% among adults 18-34.
"This show is a way to demonstrate what is going on in a positive way in the urban community," Ice Cube said in a statement.
Good in the Hood is Ice Cube's latest foray into reality television.
In 2005, the rapper rapper/actor/filmmaker teamed with R.J. Cutler and produced the series Black.White, which was broadcast on FX and featured a white family and a black family sharing a home in the San Fernando Valley.

Busta Rhymes Banned From Movie Set


Rapper Busta Rhymes was banned from a Manhattan movie set earlier this weekend by police.
Busta Rhymes, who was arrested by police last month for driving with a suspended license, was banned from the movie set due to security concerns police had over public safety.
''This is tremendously unfair to Busta, who has been nothing but professional during this project,'' said director Jeff Celentano in a statement released through his publicist. ''This is a bigger loss for the city of New York.''
The film Busta Rhymes was cast in, Order of Redemption, is a crime drama starring Academy Award nominee Tom Berenger.
The film will continue filming in Manhattan until early April even though Busta Rhymes will not be present for filming.
Aside from being arrested by police due to a suspended license, Rhymes has also upset police for his refusal to cooperate with police after his bodyguard was shot and killed on the set of the video shoot for his "Touch It (Remix)" single.

Bobby Valentino, Ludacris Address Album Leak Rumor


Earlier this week R&B singer Bobby Valentino addressed the rumor that his newest album Special Occasion, had leaked onto the Internet. "Because of the success of my debut album, and the love for my fans, I wanted to take my time with this new album Special Occasion ," Bobby Valentino said in a statement. "So in the meantime, I put out a couple of songs that I knew weren't going on the album on my MySpace & mix-tapes to give to my fans." None of the songs released online will be featured on the singer's new album which is set to be released on May 8. "His new material shows even more growth and maturity and the songs that where leaked to the Internet were a tease compared to what he has on the album," Ludacris added. Bobby Valentino first rose to fame as one of the members of the teen group MISTA, which hit big the single "Blackberry Molasses." After MISTA, Bobby Valentino attended Clark Atlanta University and would later sign with Ludacris, becoming a member of the Disturbing Tha Peace family. Special Occasion will be the follow up to Valentino's self titled 2005 album.

Grandmaster Flash And The Furious Five Inducted Into Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame


Hip-Hop history was made last night (Mar. 12), as Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
As Hip-Hop pioneers, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five were one of the first Hip-Hop groups to incorporate deejaying and emceeing in a group.
“We are going in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame to represent exactly who we are and what we did,” Melle Mel told AllHipHop.com. “Nas saying that Hip-Hop is dead is 100 percent right,” Mele Mel told AllHipHop.com. “If there's anyone who thinks that we aint worthy to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, well we should do something to prove them us, as well as Hip-Hop does belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.”
The group consisted of Grandmaster Flash, the DJ and Cowboy, Mele Mel (formerly known as Melle Mel), Kidd Creole, Raheim, and Mr. Ness, the groups MC’s.
The groundbreaking group went on to create such hits as “The Message,” “Grandmaster Flash on the Wheels of Steel,” and countless others.
Rap mogul and Def Jam Records president Jay-Z introduced the group during the introduction ceremony.
"Thirty years later rappers have become rock stars, movie stars, leaders, educators, philanthropists, even CEOs," Jay-Z said. "None of this would have been possible without the work of these men."
Formed in the South Bronx, Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five have come a long way since their first single “Superrappin” hit the streets in 1979.
The annual event took place at New York’s Waldorf Astoria hotel and other inductees included R.E.M., The Ronettes, Patti Smith, and Van Halen.

Notorious B.I.G. Album Makes Double Impact on Billboard Charts


Ten years after his still-unsolved murder, the Notorious B.I.G. continues to make an impact on the music charts.
The wordsmith's latest posthumous release, Greatest Hits, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts this week with sales of nearly 100,000 units.

Greatest Hits is the follow-up to RIAA platinum-certified Duets: The Final Chapter, which debuted at number three on the Billboard 200.

Rah Digga Leaves Flipmode Squad, Talks Acting, Rumors


Newark, New Jersey rapper Rah Digga has officially departed from Busta Rhymes' Flipmode Squad to pursue other business ventures.
The former first lady of Flipmode, Rah Digga first signed with Flipmode a decade ago and has only released one solo album since.
Her debut album, Dirty Harriet, was released in 2000 and was followed by several mixtape appearances, but another album never materialized.
“We’ve been together for damn near a decade and I haven’t had any success you know, coming out with a follow up album and I just felt like it was time to move on and make different decisions,” Rah Digga told AllHipHop.com. “We are at this stage, Flipmode as a crew, everyone’s been pretty much focused on their own endeavors. Busta’s doing his thing on Aftermath. I mean it was already established before he even got down with Aftermath, it wasn’t gonna be a Flipmode movement over there.”
Although Rah Digga’s mixtape appearances were an excellent way of keeping her name alive in the industry, it was no match to having another solo album released.
“I was working on my album at J Records that was supposed to be released in 2003 and then s**t went awry with them, so after that I was just pretty much keeping my buzz going in the mixtape circuit. After awhile, I just got a little tired of that. I felt like I was just giving away rhymes and doing whole albums and not making a dime from it,” Rah Digga said.
During her ten years as a member of the Flipmode Squad, Rah Digga went on to tackle other ventures including acting.
In 2001, Rah Digga appeared in the horror movie Thirteen Ghosts and the MTV musical Carmen: A Hip-Hopera.
Rah Digga has continued to showcase her talents as an actress and later this year she will star in two films that begin filming in April and October.
“I have one [film] going straight to DVD that’s gonna film in April, between April and May,” Rah Digga told AllHipHop.com. “I’m gonna be playing an FBI agent. The premise of the film is it’s kind of like one of those Training Day flicks where you got crooked cops and it revolves around these group of drug dealers in anybody’s hood and in the process of them getting ran down on, an FBI agent accidentally gets killed.”
Rah Digga also cleared up a rumor that she has joined an all female rap group being formed by Remy Ma, Shawnna and Jacki-O.
“Both Remi and Shawnna is my peoples and we all represent the Murda Mami’s [female coalition] together, but that doesn’t have anything to do with me leaving the Flipmode,” Rah Digga told AllHipHop.com. “What I gather from a lot of blogging and stuff that I read [is] people are wondering why I didn’t join the group, being that we all represent Murda Mami’s, but that’s not anything of interest to me. They just my peoples.”
Despite the label drama and her pursuit of acting, Rah Digga has not forgotten about rapping.
During the next few weeks, she will be holding a competition on her website, http://www.rahdiggamusic.com/, to find an artist to appear on her upcoming mixtape.
Rah Digga's next album is titled Sucker Free and will be released exclusively via iTunes this summer.
